DESCRIPTION:I wanted to share the exciting news that we (ACT for Bees) have been nominated for ‘Local Hero’ ACT Australian of the Year 2024 awards and we are in the final next Monday 30th October at 6pm.  Go to australianoftheyear.org.au to watch the live stream on Monday 30 October at 6:00pm(AEDT). #WereAllPartOfTheStoryIt is such an honour and I want to thank those who have nominated me as the representative of our group as ‘a voice for the bees and pollinators’. It is an exciting platform to show that bees are ‘more than stings and honey’\, that they are vital for food security\, biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.  With Australian Pollinator week very near\, it’s an amazing opportunity to shine a light on the range of native bees that are particularly vulnerable to pesticides\, habitat disturbance and lack of flowers! We will see how this higher public profile impacts our key message on the importance of pollinators and how we can all support their health and wellbeing by planting for year round flowering in our gardens\, our streetscapes\, our schools and open spaces. This also has a positive impact on our health and wellbeing as a growing body of research is showing.

SUMMARY:ACT Pollinator Citizen Science Project
DESCRIPTION:This October 2023\, citizen science surveys of insect pollinators will commence as part of the Canberra Urban Biodiversity Surveys (CUBS)\, an exciting new initiative from the ACT Government. Ecologists in the Office of Nature Conservation are calling upon enthusiastic volunteers to conduct simple 30-minute visual surveys of insect pollinators interacting with floral resources at designated monitoring sites. All you need is a camera to capture photos of these pollinators and a computer to upload the photos as a survey to Canberra Nature Map. Be sure to stay tuned to the Canberra Nature Map home page for upcoming details and an official call for volunteers. Your participation will not only contribute to important research on urban biodiversity but also enrich your connection with the fascinating world of insect pollinators! Of course we will also have our favourite children’s activity. ‘Be a Bee and Pollinate the Apple Tree as well’ which is so popular with children of all ages (including adults!)\nThere will be food\, drinks\, live acts\, market\, kids corner\, a giant raffle\, an Aboriginal-painted beehive auction and more… All proceeds are going to beekeepers in Ukraine\, so let’s raise some funds💰!!!

The main purpose of World Bee Day events is to spread awareness and action for pollinators! The purpose of World Bee day is to raise awareness of the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy. It provides an opportunity for governments\, organisations\, civil society and concerned citizens everywhere to promote actions that will protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats\, improve their abundance and diversity\, and support the sustainable development of beekeeping. \nBees play an important role in pollinating native plants in our Australian ecosystem. The vast majority of global pollinators are wild including over 20\,000 species of bees. Australia is home to around 2\,000 species of native bees\, the majority of which are solitary bees. \nEuropean Honeybees are social insects that were introduced to pollinate many of the introduced food crops that now form part of a normal Australian diet. Beekeepers migrate their bees to produce honey from diverse flowering events and perform essential pollination services to safeguard our food\, fibre\, forests and fodder crops. \nFood security\nBees are keystone species\, playing a vital role as pollinators. \nGlobal population forecasts predict that we will have close to one third more people in the next 30 years. To feed this growing population and secure the well-being of humankind\, we need to ensure food is available\, accessible\, diverse\, balanced and of good quality. \nPollination is crucial to achieving food security as three out of four crops across the globe producing fruits or seeds for human consumptions as food depend\, at least in part\, on pollinators.
